Gr 2-4—After visiting an observatory with his school class, Sadiq and a few of his classmates form a space club. They want to buy a telescope so they can spend more time looking at the stars and planets. When buying a telescope proves too expensive, the children make plans to build one instead. They work together to provide food for the school fundraiser to earn money for supplies to build their telescope. Sadiq's family is from Somalia, and references to the country, language, and traditions are blended into the text. A story told to Sadiq by his Baba (father) inspires his interest in the stars before the field trip. Full-color illustrations, a glossary, facts about Somalia, and a list of Somali terms are included along with activities to extend learning. VERDICT A pleasant, informative read that blends family and STEM themes; recommended for general purchase.—Heidi Grange, Summit Elementary School, Smithfield, UT
