PreS-Gr 2--The first graders of Robin Hill School are excited to welcome a special guest--classmate Eigen's mom, Ms. Wong. During her visit, Ms. Wong explains that she is there to discuss Lunar New Year, which is Eigen's favorite holiday. As she shares facts about the holiday with the class, the students excitedly try to guess why Eigen loves it so much. After explaining that Lunar New Year is a special time for families, that it welcomes spring, brings luck, and honors the 12 animals of the zodiac, Ms. Wong discusses the delicious food, including dumplings, shared during the holiday. Concluding spreads show the class enjoying dumplings together--Eigen's favorite part of the festivities. The story is well-suited for new and emerging readers, using simple sentence structures and frequent use of sight words. Illustrations depict the diverse members of the classroom, along with sights from Lunar New Year celebrations. VERDICT A welcome addition to early reader or Lunar New Year collections.--Olivia Gorecke
