Shivers, the scaredy-est pirate to ever sail the Seven Seas, is back. Comic book-like illustrations in each chapter bring Shivers to life and invite even the most reluctant readers to join the adventure. Perfect for fans of such series as Stick Dog, Big Nate, Dork Diaries, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
This time, Shivers must set sail again to get his beloved ship, the Land Lady, back from Mayor Sheila B. President. Shivers won't be going alone, however. He'll be bringing his best pal, Margo, and his loyal fishmate, Albee, on a clingy-clam and hot dog filled adventure. Like all good pirates, Shivers will just have to grab his swimmies (and his bunny slippers) and jump right into this epic tale.

Gr 3-5—Shivers, the most panic-prone pirate who ever feared the Seven Seas, is back with his newfound friend, Margo, and his first mate, Albee the blowfish. Shivers must find the courage to rescue his beloved ship, the Land Lady, back from Mayor Shelia B. President (who readers later discover is neither a mayor nor a president). Shivers is charged with stealing the Treasure Torch, which becomes the demise of Mayor, and he returns it to its rightful owner because "it [is] hard to believe a piece of treasure could make you all that powerful anyway." The themes that anchor this humor-filled adventure are family, friendship, and courage. This is a whirlwind romp that most readers will eagerly embrace. Comic-style black-and-white illustrations are on almost every page, making this ideal for newly independent readers and young fans of graphic novels. VERDICT A fun addition to chapter book collections.—Gwen Collier, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, NY
