PreS-Gr 1--Bruce is a terribly grumpy bear, and his curmudgeonly ways, which have endeared him to picture book audiences, are on full display in this beginning reader series. The humorous illustrations are perfect for kids who will chuckle at the juxtaposition of the text and the art, which tell wildly different stories. It turns out that Bruce is grumpy but he just might have good reason to be. His mouse friend, Nibbs, plans a big, fun day but his idea of what fun is misses the mark entirely. While the text describes each activity, the art shows how horrible it all turns out for Bruce. Nibbs is well-intentioned but his efforts make Bruce even more grumpy. Readers won't despair, though, because it turns out that being grumpy is the best fun of all for Bruce. While this is not a standout in the beginning reader category, it is certainly one that children will read and enjoy. VERDICT First grade teachers will find this a welcome addition to their beginning reader bins.--Joan Kindig, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA
