Code Like a Girl: Rad Tech Projects and Practical Tips

by Miriam Peskowitz (Author)

Reading Level: 6th − 7th Grade
Welcome to Code Like a Girl, where you'll get started on the adventure of coding with cool projects and step-by-step tips, from the co-author of the bestselling The Daring Book for Girls. Coding is about creativity, self-expression, and telling your story. It's solving problems and being curious, building things, making the world a better place, and creating a future. It's about you: whoever you are, wherever you're at, whatever you want. Nearly everything you encounter on a screen is made from code. You see, with code you can have an idea and put it into action: it's your voice and your vision. From the outside, tech and code may seem puzzling and mysterious, but when you get through the door and past the first few beginner steps and your code starts to work, it feels like magic. In this book, you'll learn how to: - Code with Scratch--projects like making a dog walk through the park, sending your friend a card, and devising a full-scoring game!- Build your own computer--really!- Create your own digital fortune-teller, with the Python language.- Make your own smartphone gloves.- Make light-up bracelets.- Code a motion sensor that tells you when someone enters your room.- And lots more!

Gr 6-9-Peskowitz conceived of this project after attending a White House conference on girls and technology; she learned to code so that she could write this book. She tells readers that if she could learn, so can they. Readers are encouraged not to get frustrated if the coding fails, because learning how to debug is part of the journey. Peskowitz divides the book into sections on coding with Scratch, building a Raspberry Pi computer, coding with Python, and tinkering by combining coding with technology to create items like a light-up scarf or bracelet. She guides readers step by step through the process of each project. The directions are accompanied by colorful hand-drawn illustrations that are suitable for most of the projects, but it may be difficult to envision the end result of others. The text is written with different fonts of various colors, which makes for an upbeat design. Readers with little tech background but high interest should be able to follow the directions. A list of sources for all the materials is given, and the book includes a glossary and index. VERDICT This book is well suited for readers who want to dip their toes into technology but don't know where to start.-Elizabeth Kahn, Patrick F. Taylor Science & Technology Academy, Avondale, LA
