School Library Journal

Gr 2-5-This book is arranged in sections: rocks and minerals, microscopic life, plants, and animals. Each section contains a variety of examples within these categories. It is unclear how the entries were chosen beyond the four broad categories; however, young readers looking for trivia on the natural world will enjoy the selections. The combined photography and illustrations are eye-catching, and the two-page spread for each entry will appeal to young readers. The gilded edges and attractive cover will make it an easy choice for face-out or coffee table displays. VERDICT While not particularly helpful for research purposes, young readers with an interest in the world around them will heartily enjoy this title. A suggested purchase for most collections, and a good choice for those needing a gift for young naturalists. -Ellen Conlin, Naperville Public Library, IL
