Sleep, My Bunny

Sleep, My Bunny
Reading Level: K − 1st Grade
From the treasured creator of Max and Ruby comes a soothing, quintessential lullaby of a book for the very young. The owls and the crickets are singing together. Outside the window, night falls in a vivid, expressionistic ode to Van Gogh. But inside the cozy house, in rooms lit with soft pastels, parents guide their little bunny through a universal routine: eating supper, putting toys away, taking a bath, reading a story, listening to a song. With gorgeous artwork and a simple poetic narrative offering the perfect script for a reassuring voice, Rosemary Wells gently ties nature's rhythms to familiar ritual, creating a bedtime read-aloud certain to lull every small child into slumber.

A swirling night sky contrasts with the cozy indoors in this original lullaby from the creator of beloved siblings Max and Ruby. The spare text has an appropriately lulling rhythm as it moves from poetic whimsy ("The morning is hiding behind the next cloud") to a final invocation ("May the noises of evening be gentle and airy./ Let nothing be scary and nothing be loud)." The illustrations provide the greatest delights in scenes that follow a preschooler in a snug country house through dinner, bath, stories and music, and a final tuck-in, all with the help of two loving caregivers. Wells's genius is in conveying preschoolers' emotions and family moments with artful accuracy, and in these pages, the small bunny's enthusiasms and the family's tender, joyful bonds are irresistibly clear. Small spot drawings, linked to either words in the text or objects in the accompanying illustrations, provide an added opportunity for a seek-and-find game, while the dark, moonlit outdoors, viewed through each interior scene's windows and rendered in Van Gogh-like swirls of dense, contrasting color, adds another exciting dimension to this reassuring gift to sleepy bunnies everywhere. Ages 2-5. (Nov.)

PreS-Bunny parents prepare their little one for bed. Four lines of large text enclosed in a square on white ground describe night noises outside. Birds and insects sing their evening songs, the moon moves across the sky, and gentle summer rain "as soft as/ a feather" patters against the window. A scene depicting each parent's participation in the bedtime ritual appears opposite each page of text. Mother serves dinner, helps her bunny gather bath supplies and pajamas, and reads him a story. The alternating pages show father helping his son put away toys, bathe, and play a gentle evening song on his violin. Wells's illustrations are rendered in mixed media and Roche pastels on sanded paper. In a striking spread across the copyright and title pages, Impressionistic strokes of color capture the sky as evening begins to descend amid the brilliant yellows and oranges of the setting sun. A cozy house stands in a grassy field, light shining from a single window on the ground floor. The different colored strokes that appear on each page of text are echoed in the frames around the words and behind the window that appears in each scene. The facial expressions on Wells's familiar bunnies demonstrate parental love enjoyed by their contented offspring. VERDICT This gentle lullabylike offering in which nothing is "scary" or "loud" is the perfect choice for a quiet one-on-one read with little ones before bed.--Marianne Saccardi, Children's Literature Consultant, Cambridge, MA
