K-Gr 3—Lunar voyages have never been so silly as in this sixth outing for the "best little ghost in the world" Johnny Boo and his pal Squiggle. In this intallment, Johnny Boo and Squiggle attempt to skateboard to the moon, encountering returning characters such as the friendly but not-so-bright stars and the not-so-scary ice cream monster. They also make a new friend in girl ghost Susie Boom, an enthusiastic moon resident whose powerful "BOOM!" is equal to Johnny's signature "BOO!" Kochalka has created a cheerfully wacky universe in text, plot, and visuals: the bright colors, thick blue outlines, and simple yet expressive cartoon figures perfectly match the absurd situations and goofy dialogue. The good humor of this series will be infectious for young listeners and newly independent readers alike.—Sarah Stone, San Francisco Public Library

James Kochalka
JAMES KOCHALKA is, without question, one of the most unique and prolific alternative cartoonists working in America today. His comics have been published internationally by almost every alternative comics publisher; he's recorded several music albums under the name James Kochalka Superstar (making him a favorite at college radio stations across the country); and he's developed animated cartoons for Nickelodeon and Cartoon Hangover.

He is the first official Cartoonist Laureate of the state of Vermont, appointed in 2011.

Among his best known works are the Monkey vs Robot series, the beloved children's series Johnny Boo, Dragon Puncher, and Glorkian Warrior, and his magnum opus, the 14-year span of daily diary comics known as American Elf.
