by Philippe Ogaki (Author) Valeriane Duvivier (Illustrator)
In the ancient times of Gods and heroes, evil attempted to seize the world disguising themselves as six different gods. While they were spreading all their power of destruction, six heroes, each with extraordinary powers and brandishing sacred weapons, rose against these incarnations of evil. The evil was defeated and sealed in a secret place within the red desert on the planet Mars …
Today, enter six young heirs: Yuko of Japan, Parvati of India, Amir of Egypt, Abigail of Germany, Miguel of Mexico, and Neo of Greece suddenly pulled from their everyday lives. About to face the greatest threat that the contemporary world has ever known, in a flash, they get to discover just how worthy successors they may be of the ancient heroes.

Several young people all over the world live ordinary lives until extraordinary events alter their fates forever. In Japan, Yuko gains the ability to control electricity and travel through electrical currents. The sole heir to an enormous fortune, Amir, in Egypt, discovers he can harness the powers of the moon and sun. And singer Abigail, in Germany, realizes that her voice can shatter objects. Each of these stories follows a similar trajectory: Mythology-inspired beings from the spirit world appear to guide the teens through their transformations; the protagonists learn that they must use their powers to fight an evil creature, which takes on a disguise; and they track down weapons to defeat evil. The tales move quickly, although they start to feel repetitive. Eye-catching, colorful artwork blends traditional and manga cartoon styles. VERDICT Readers who appreciate a lively mix of mythology, fantasy, and action will enjoy following Yuko, Amir, and Abigail and will be curious about future volumes, which will center on more teens with out-of-this world abilities.—Andrea Lipinski, New York Public Library

With slight variations, each entry in the collection of standalone tales follows the same bare-bones plot: Yuko of Japan, Amir of Egypt, and Abigail of Germany are introduced and mysteriously manifest a mark on their body (e.g., the Eye of Horus) before discovering their respective lineages--as descendants of Raijin, Horus, and Freya--and conflicting with Evil manifesting as Fuijin, Seth, and Loki. Though this repetition lessens the stories' impact, detailed, sometimes claustrophobic artwork makes each location distinct, providing variety. Ages 8-12. (Mar.)
