In this gift book with a small trim size, Swerling and Lazar offer examples of playful, rhymed pairings that serve as expressions of love: "I love you like a cat loves the sun,// like kids love fun,// and like a puppy loves to run." Nestling between the lines, humorous spot art features anthropomorphized plants, animals, and objects alongside stick-limbed people with varied skin tones. In one spread, a child seeking to hug a cactus looks relieved when given a blue stuffed rabbit ("I love you like a cuddle loves// a bunny"). The blend of sweet, sentimental, and funny assures appeal for those wanting to share something special with friends, family, or valentines. All ages. (Nov.)
Copyright 2022 Publishers Weekly, LLC Used with permission.PreS-K--A sweet novelty book has its charms as simile follows simile in rhyming, patterned language, with most of the humor coming from the double set of illustrations for each comparison. The first illustration of a canoe shows it looking a bit perturbed as it walks over desert, but it soon finds its happy place on a lake; there is a pirate who loves his "X" and a witch who loves her "hex," and then "Although these pairings are all true, sometimes simpler words will do...To put it plainly...I LOVE YOU!" Some similes will be easily understood by young children ("like feet love to dance") while others, e.g., a reference to Jane and Tarzan, may be a stretch. VERDICT This engaging book could become a favorite in some preschool settings.--Jenny Arch
