PreS-Gr 2--A peppy rhyming picture book about how monsters prepare for Christmas that is perfect for monster fans, Christmas fans, and monsters-at-Christmas fans. Readers follow along as the monsters bake, play in the snow, decorate a tree, and even stir up some shenanigans in true monster style. Cheerful rhymes on every page create a sense of play and intrigue: "Joyful monster, toy-ful monster, filling up a sack, / Peeking monster, sneaking monster, HEY NOW give that back!" Young readers will enjoy learning about all the different kinds of monsters, (including stocking monsters and snuggle monsters), but children and adults alike will delight in all of the colorful monster details popping from each page. Adults can invite readers to notice details by finding the "Santa monster" on every page, and then ask children to create their own type of Christmas monster. This book is perfect for early readers, although some made-up words, like "toes-y" and "toy-ful," may give pause. VERDICT A joyful addition to any library seeking books reminiscent of the style of Todd Parr.--Amanda Chacon
