PreS-Gr 2--This humorous picture book, written in a familiar format, is sure to tickle the funny bones of young children who are excited about Halloween. Using the template of the classic song "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," this tale chronicles an adorable young zombie as he tries to solve the problem of a worm he ate that is making him squirm. He keeps swallowing something that could take care of the discomfort of the newest item he swallowed, but each thing he gulps down gets bigger and has its own set of problems. When the bat, toad, witch, ghost, beast, and troll do not help his digestive problems, he gulps down an entire swamp. This does the trick. When everything is thrown up, he feels much better, but finds he is still hungry and is on the prowl again. The author's use of rhyme and alliteration adds a playful cadence to the narrative. While this contributes to the book's charm and rhythm, at times the content seems to sacrifice clarity for the sake of maintaining the rhyme scheme. The illustrations are a visual treat; vibrant and detailed, they capture the Halloween spirit. VERDICT This lighthearted read-aloud is a good choice for parents and librarians seeking a Halloween story that will leave youngsters giggling and eager for tales more silly than spooky.--Lynne Stover

Review quotes

[N]ot at all spooky, just pure Halloween fun.
— Jamie Bills

...there are plenty of chances to get readers up and squirming, fluttering and flapping, giggling, and cackling. Colorful, expressive characters are cartoony, never scary, and endpapers show everyone who ends up in the Young Zombie's hungry maw. A fun additional purchase for holiday collection.

Kaye Baillie
Tanja Stephani is a full time illustrator, a sculptor, an artist, and a bluegrass bass player. She lives and works in an old farmhouse on a mountain in Switzerland, with her pets, her lovely husband, her grown-up children and her creative grandmother! After art school she trained as a graphic designer in the early eighties without a computer: that's how she learned to do everything by hand! Her work steps are to first imagine a character, second to illustrate it on paper, and third bring it to life in three dimensional paperclay. She uses all kind of materials, and loves to explore new media to create with. The magic of giving life to her characters, in illustrations or as three-dimensional figures, gives her a wonderful feeling. When she's not drawing, you can find her in her big vegetable garden in the forest, on the ground playing with her pets, or sitting together with her family and friends playing music.

If you asked Kaye Baillie to choose her favorite mode of transportation, she would say 'a vintage train'. She once traveled by train for three days across Australia where she lives and would love to do it again. She would scribble ideas in a notebook just like Olive. Kaye is an award winning children's author. Visit her online at kayebaillie.com.
