PreS-Gr 1—This lively picture book contains a solid overview of football—minus the more obscure rules. Full-color photographs of current NFL stars on brightly colored backgrounds demonstrate different offensive and defensive plays—as well as gaffes like fumbles—throughout the four quarters of a typical game. Running alongside the professionals is a comically drawn tot in a bright red football helmet who navigates the pages with humorous asides and Kids Say the Darndest Things-esque observations. The simplification of the game makes this volume an excellent introduction for young children who are interested in learning more about the sport, as well as a fun read-aloud for sports-themed storytimes. Descriptions of the timing of the plays, an explanation of the down system, and a well-placed potty joke at halftime add to the fun. Bugler avoids discussing overtime, as well as many of the often infuriatingly vague, subjective penalties, but overall the text effectively conveys the gist of the game. It's sure to give children (and perhaps even curious adults) a small sense of mastery so they, too, can join in the Sunday excitement throughout the football season. VERDICT A recommended addition to rejuvenate nonfiction sports collections.—Abby Bussen, Cudahy Family Library, WI
