K-Gr 3--Moms are off duty this Mother's Day when, in a "switcheroo," children take the reins to care for their nanas, madres, and grandmamas, with breakfast in bed and handmade cards created from the heart. The tradition to celebrate Mother's Day recognizes moms around the world in this poetic ode to motherhood. "But it's true that whatever we call them...all moms everywhere in the whole wide world/ love their children like your mom loves you!" What appears to be a day of relaxation for the matriarchal figure involves the entire family, including Taco the dog, as cheerful illustrations depict a diverse range of youngsters expressing their unconditional love for mom. Mothers in search of a day of leisure are ultimately sprung into one of fun and activities, including getting front row seat to the The Mother's Day Show, performed by the children. Steinberg successfully provides a textually rhythmic interpretation of Mother's Day. Wieman's colorful representation of multicultural mother figures is as well developed as the author's humorous rhyme schemes.VERDICT Clever and ideal for engaging children as they explore concepts of independence, resourcefulness, preparation, and planning, while tenderly celebrating expressions of maternal love and bonding through positive interactions with the family matriarch.--Kimberly Filmore
