Poppy is sad when her toy bunny's dress rips. Now she'll have to throw it away! But her mom has other ideas. She shows Poppy the trunk in her sewing room, and it's full of fabric scraps! There are so many patterns--dots and stripes, checkers and chevron. Each scrap has its own story. Fabric from Granddad's tie, Nana's dress, and her auntie's scarf come together with Mom's sewing machine to make something special--just like their family!

A heartening tribute to family—and an inspired example of upcycling.

Publishers Weekly

A mother and daughter, portrayed with brown skin, share stories of those they love in a conversational narrative that stitches together family history and repurposed swatches. When young Poppy accidentally rips her stuffed bunny's dress, Mom opens the old trunk in her sewing room, which contains patterned scraps from outworn garments, each one special. Together, the two recall family members and their favorite activities. Paisley represents an old tie once belonging to Granddad, who still loves to dress up; a plaid bit of sundress was worn by Nana, a keen gardener; and polka-dotted lace that captures "a magical day" when Poppy's parents were married. As Poppy's mom finds a fitting use for the scraps, digital illustrations in a saturated palette employ collage-style elements, supplying a paper-doll vibe to a moving work that attires the present with the past. A pattern library and author's note conclude. Ages 4-8. (June)

Review quotes

Lauren Semmer
Lauren Semmer is a bestselling children's book illustrator who grew up in a community of Black, home-textile artists. When she isn't making picture books, like The ABC's of Black History, written by Rio Cortez, and To Boldly Go: How Nichelle Nichols and Star Trek Helped Advance Civil Rights, written by Angela Dalton, she collects fabric scraps and dreams of having her own fabric line. Like Poppy, she's not afraid to wear ALL the patterns at the same time. This is her authorial debut.
